Fernando Llorente scored twice against Schalke

Fernando Llorente scored twice to help Athletic Bilbao rally for a 4-2 win at Schalke in the Europa League on Thursday night, and Atletico Madrid beat Hannover 2-1 in the other first-leg quarterfinal between Spanish and German teams, reports The Associated Press.
At Gelsenkirchen, Llorente put the visitors ahead in the 20th minute before Raul Gonzalez gave Schalke a 2-1 lead with goals in the 22nd and 59th. Llorente’s header tied it in the 73rd, and Atletico got goals from Oscar de Marcos in the 81st and Iker Muniain in the third minute of injury time.
“It was a great game,” Llorente said. “It wasn’t at all easy because they responded very well to our first goal. What Raul did was incredible. You can’t ask anything more of a match.”
Atletico won at home with goals by Radamel Falcao in the ninth minute and Eduardo Salvio in the 89th. Mame Biram Diouf scored in the 38th for Hannover.
Dutch league leader AZ Alkmaar beat Valencia 2-1 on goals by Brett Holman in first-half injury time and Maarten Martens in the 79th, and Sporting Lisbon defeated Ukraine’s Metalist Kharkiv 2-1 on goals by Marat Izmailov in the 51st and Emiliano Insua in the 64th.
Americans Jermaine Jones (Schalke), Steve Cherundolo (Hannover) and Jozy Altidore (AZ) all started.
The second legs of the total-goals series are next Thursday.
